123 /   HD   INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES

23SOLID FUEL

DEFINITION

Classification: 123/23

Internal-combustion engines in which a solid nonexplosive fuel or combustible is introduced into and burned within the working cylinder of an internal-combustion engine or into a combustion-chamber in permanently open communication therewith and the energy of the resulting gases converted into work by permitting them to expand and act upon a piston moving in the said cylinder. The solid fuel may be introduced into the working cylinder upon each successive cycle of operation of the engine and in quantities sufficient only to supply the energy required for the successive working strokes of the engine, or it may be introduced at comparatively long intervals of time and in quantities sufficient to furnish energy for several working strokes, in which case air only is supplied upon the successive cycles of operation to consume portions of the charge of fuel already within the engine.
