By breaking and straightening toggle-linkages:

(under subclass 398) Subject matter wherein the mechanism includes at least two toggle-linkage* assemblages associated with a lever for moving the type-bar*, one of which toggle-linkages act to move the lever when the toggle-linkage is straightened and the other of which toggle-linkages act to move the lever when the toggle-linkage is broken.
