DEFINITION

Classification: 536/112

(under subclass 1.1) Compounds which are high molecular weight polysaccharides containingD-glucose units linked predominately -D (16).

(1) Note. Dextrans yield only glucose on hydrolysis but differ otherwise from starch and glycogen as in molecular structure, etc.

(2) Note. Dextrans are actually a group of compounds differing according to the bacteria used to ferment the sugar.

(3) Note. Controlled hydrolysis of native detran yields clinical dextran of lower molecular weight which is useful as a blood plasma substitute.
